Arugadh here! Gods, I got so sick of the IeSF's justification for this, and even more sick of commenters (male & female) whining on WoWInsider in support of the IeSF's segregation: their "reasoning" is that women needed "safe places" to compete so they wouldn't be "intimidated"...by gamer guys sitting at computers, in competitions overseen by referees, and that have sportsman-conduct rules in place like every other sport does. Like I say -- Intimidation, my ASS.
Thankfully, those whiners were few...but damn, I still got sick of them.

Fucking... THANK YOU.
Just... THANK YOU.
Breaking off chunks of the playerbase to go play by itself does more damage then just having one big-ass turny for everyone. Get good, go prove it, get kudos.
Giving each group its own special snowflake turny does nothing but cement the idea that "Only guys can play games well." Because if girls COULD play games well, they'd not need a special tournament.
It should be about seeing the players play. Making all these little subsets do nothing but dilute women from competing in the big turny, and it makes whoever wins the all-women turny appear weaker as a player, since "they couldn't compete with the real players"
Let's go kick over tables and beat the shit out of people Rug, it feels like that kind of day.

Arugadh here again -- It's my pleasure, Thorn. And I agree with you completely.
I understand the need for separate women's competitions in physical sports, since -- bluntly -- men and women are physically different and have strengths in different areas due to biology. No one looks down on women or men because of it.
But video games?? Especially STRATEGY games that depend on nothing but intelligence? Bah.
I'm all for kicking over the tables and terrifying those IeSF nerds with my Big Honkin' Sword of Justice (and Trig will verify that I have three of those, and know how to use them). Though I prefer a good decapitating cleave over beating the shit out of them -- decapitation lets me display a trophy. ;)

Yet again you are my hero, Rug... :D
